The new issue of "ARO" (Annali Reviews Online) 2023/2 inaugurates a new season for the Italian-German Historical Institute at the Bruno Kessler Foundation, with the renewal of its governing bodies. In January 2023, the directorship of Christoph Cornelissen (2017-2023) came to an end. It is to his insight that we owe the creation of "ARO", which these now celebrates its sixth year of activity. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his scientific and personal contributions over the years.
As of February 2023, Massimo Rospocher, whom we warmly welcome, has taken over as Director of the Institute. The new Director has overseen the reorganization of the editorial boards of ISIG's journals (for more, see below). We would also like to welcome new colleagues who have joined the Editorial Board and thank those who have collaborated in previous years.
In this new phase, "ARO" (Annali Reviews Online) will continue to disseminate scientific research with the aim of promoting transnational dialogue between specialists in the historical sciences.
This new issue opens with a forum dedicated to Giorgio Caravale's monograph (Libri pericolosi. Censura e cultura italiana in età moderna, Roma - Bari, Laterza, 2022), presented to readers by two leading specialists in the field: Mario Infelise and Emily Michelson. Infelise and Michelson reflect on this extensive study dedicated to a crucial early phase in the history of censorship: that period in the sixteenth century saw the birth and consolidation of an apparatus of preventative and repressive control over all printed production, carried out mainly by Catholic ecclesiastical institutions, in defence and reaction to the emergence of the Protestant Reformation. The consequences of this censorship system have lasted for centuries.
As always, the issue contains 25 reviews of recent works on different historical periods, reflecting the broad interests of European historiography and addressing important themes of social, political, economic, and cultural history, with a particular focus on historiography relating to Italian and German areas.
